soundproofing

Sound and Noise basics

Here we are going to give the first principles

What is sound/noise

Sound is energy, transported through a transmission media, normally air but anything can transmit sound normally if its not transmitted through air it is thought of as a vibration. Sound is audible oscillation (frequency between 500Hz-26kHz)

How can I stop sound/noise?

You generally have one of two options:

  • Dissipate or absorb sound, that is convert the energy from one form to another or from one frequency of oscilation to another.
  • Prevent transmission by sealing or decoupling the area of noise from the area to be soundproofed

    absorbtion

can be acomplished by using high mass materials with special damping characteristics that will reduce reflected noise.

    decoupling

has to be accomplished by creating a sealed air tight container to keep sound from propagating through the air.
